Biography

Roe was a member of the Scottish family of painters and his father was Robert Henry Roe. Clarence is perhaps the best known of the family today. The family seems to have worked in London though many of their subjects are landscape scenes. The family had contacts with an art gallery, which was probably owned by Robert Henry and would have sold the majority of the family's pictures. From the 1850's there was an enormous market in England for views of Scotland which had been popularized by Queen Victoria. Bibl: Victorian Painters - Christopher Wood
